Information and booking:
From time to time I hold comedy ‘drop-ins’ for those interested in doing some work around stand-up comedy.
The six-hour session (including breaks) are suitable for people of all abilities and experience. We look at a mixture of things like: How do you write jokes? How do you respond to hecklers? How do you make your own comedy distinctive?
Newcomers are just as welcome as those already getting paid work and the aim is for us all to learn more about stand-up comedy in a concentrated yet entertaining atmosphere.
The drop-ins take place at the Hampstead Comedy Club in north London. People arrive at 11.45am for a prompt midday start.
Places are restricted to a maximum of 12 people. The price is £25. Also, attendees are offered reduced admission to that night’s comedy performance at the Club.
Feedback from previous drop-ins:
Previous participants have been kind enough to supply written feedback. Although their comments were made in a spirit of confidentiality, they have all given pemission to be be quoted:
‘It has really helped me think about why we perform comedy, about being interesting and entertaining, how to interact with an audience and how to be more topical, creative and show who we are on stage, rather than trying to be somebody we’re not.’ (XF)
I just wanted to say a massive thank you for today. I am already starting to rewrite my material and hopefully come up with something more from the heart – and funnier too hopefully. (TA)
Since attending Ivor’s drop in my confidence has shot up. From novices to experienced pros, everyone has got something to learn from Ivor, whose enthusiasm was relentless. My eyes were opened to the possibility of writing and performing excellent comedy, something I hope to achieve myself. (SW)
The session was a real eye opener. Your approach to looking at stand up and your teaching methods were inspiring. (DG)
The most important thing to me was you encouraged us to look to ourselves, particularly the hidden dark corners where we don’t like to look, saying stuff people don’t say. I came away with a definite feeling of where I could start to find the funny. The whole day was genuine and about finding yourself and not finding a formula. Thank you for that. (MN)
‘I did a gig straight after the drop-in and not only did I storm it, but acts who know my work told me it was my best performance by far. After gigging for almost 2 years and killing one night and dying the next, your workshop has helped me to understand what this thing called stand up is really about. I cannot thank you enough.’ (DR)
‘This session doesn’t make you into an identikit comedian, it makes you look at how to be yourself on stage. Ivor gives advice that he’s come to through hard-earned experience, and gives decent honest feedback. It’s certainly worth a day of your time and well worth twenty quid’ (AF)
I really enjoyed my day. I had no idea what to expect and came away learning so much. It was great to meet a group of people with such a wide range of experience. Most of all, I came away impressed with the way that you ran the event. Providing blunt but clear and honest feedback and handling a wide range of styles and personalities. (TR)
Really useful session which helped me think about why we do things, to take a step back and analyse my comedy foundations. (AO)
